80s Fashion is Making a Comeback in Today’s Retro Wave
70′s and 80′s are recalled by many being the harbingers of different fashion styles and statements. The experiments carried out in designs impressed millions in those times. The fashion industry had a very quick transition during those years. The emergence of MTV revolutionised music industry, fashion and anything it could be related to. People tried to express themselves in many ways. The era saw abrupt changes in the styles of women and men.
In the decade of 70′s the dress code that people had was about wearing a tight upper with a loose lower. In 80′s the fashion almost inverted itself. Women began to wear bolder dresses with shoulder pads. Men wore loose trousers tapering at the ankles and tight shirts made of expensive fabrics.. “Romantic Movement” inspired by the former ruffians was commonly started by a new designer romantic look. The hot and fashionable outfits of leather and designer jeans also emerged later and became an integral part of fashion.
Women had adapted wearing high heel pointed shoes as business wear & jelly shoes that were transparent and came in glossy colours as party wear. Tracksuits and jog-pants became leisure wear in this era. Rock bands solemnized acid washed faded jeans, denim jackets in addition to piercing and tattooing as fashion statement of the era. Men begun to wear flashy earrings. Hairstyle included a lot of mousse which resulted in a shiny voluminous look. Crimped hair with contrasting streaks of colour was loved by teenagers. Women appeared in short and men in long hair.
The wealthy and powerful wore jewellery engraved with valuable gemstones. Women resorted to wearing long earrings, often different in both ears. Sometimes, they even used single earrings. Chains made of silver and gold, punk style and bright colors in jewellery arrived to fashion. Shape of the jewellery changed considerably. Digital watches with metal wristbands started popularising the starting of ‘80s but afterwards adults returned to dial watches. Teens still preferred the vibrant colours of plastic wrist watches. Watch faces had roman numerals. High class preferred to wear Movado style that was sleek and had a dot at 12. Once in a blue moon people also wore multiple watch at the same time. People also made it a point to use fine gold bracelets and hoops earrings.
Designer bags manufactured from leather were also among the trend setters. Clutch bags captivated interest amongst people for being so firm and appressed. Stylish briefcases also sold very well. It was normal for women to match their footwear colour to their bags. Shawls in different designs and colors became a favorite of the women. These shawls could be worn with tops in the day and gowns at night. Designer under garments also set styles. Women chosen the ones with laces and light colours. Vibrant boxer shorts in various patterns and stripes became available for men. Around 1984-85 metal framed spectacles became popular. A smaller rounder type was the people’s choice throughout the decade. Fashion had a huge repercussion and bearing on the lives of people during those decades.
